A new phenomenon: Syrian refugees
By: Ghamra Rifai and Alaa Homsi

After being forced to leave their home country Syria, due to the inhumane treatment by the Assad regime, these people headed to Libya when they saw the Libyan government’s support for the Syrian Revolution. Unfortunately, they were shocked by the harsh reality in the city of El-Salloum on the Libyan-Egyptian borders. The two countries had cooperated to ensure that Syrian refugees do not enter the Libyan lands without a visa, something they had not been told about previously.

Once again, fate did not play in these people’s favor, and put them through some of the worst humanitarian conditions. El-Salloum Syrian refugees we not taken into consideration by any programs geared toward humanitarian aid and relief for refugees. As a result, these refugees are in limbo, where they cannot go back home to Syria and they cannot get into Libya. The Syrian refugees of El-Salloum left their homes with nothing except the clothes they were wearing, and they are now going through some of the harshest humanitarian conditions. In the absence of aid, they are staying in a small inn that was rented out for them by some Egyptian donors and can barely hold all of them.

At the time of this report, there were nearly 300 Syrian refugees, most of whom are women and children. They are living in very rough conditions in the inn, where women stay in room with an average of 13 persons per room, while men sleep under the staircase or in the corridors. Matters are getting worse because of the spreading malaria infections among the refugees. This poses a major threat of turning a major humanitarian disaster into a catastrophe, if the disease continues to spread under the unhygienic conditions in which the refugees are living.

A Syrian activist, who was one of those who left Syria and was on her way to Libya, reached El-Salloum by chance. She had left her home in Syria, which she later found out had been leveled by shelling. What she saw shocked her, so she decided to capture some of the misery that Syrian refugees are going through in El-Salloum:

One of the Syrian refugees in El-Salloum said that some Egyptian people are collecting donations in mosques to help buy food for the refugees. In the following video refugees are talking about how people are collecting money for them:

The Syrian activist also capture footage of some refugee children who could not understand what had happened to them after they were forced to flee their homes, in which they had at some point led normal lives in Syria, at least seemingly so to a child. These children are now suffering awful conditions, which even grown up men cannot handle:

The refugees also talked about their suffering in all aspects of life. For example, they have no idea what is going on in the rest of the world, because they are cut off from the outside world. They are also suffering from extremely bad hygienic conditions, a dirty environment, and other miserable situations. In this video, refugees talk about these awful conditions:

The refugees also talked about the corruption they have to deal with, and the bribes that they were asked to pay in order to get into Libya legally. Two weeks ago, this amount was about 200 Egyptian pounds two weeks ago, and had at the time of this report gone up to 700 Libyan dinars, which is over 3000 Egyptian pounds.  In this video refugees talk about dealing with regime-hired thugs (Shabiha) who are making their lives miserable even outside Syria, and how they have to pay these bribes to get into Libya:

Despite all the suffering, the Syrian refugees did not forget about why they ended up there in the first place: to overthrow the regime that had gotten them to this place. The following video is part of an interview with a refugee who promises that Bashar Assad and his regime will be toppled by the women and families who are being subjected to the worst kind of abuse because of the regime’s practices:
